The forever taper

Image
The weird thing about running all of the marathons and half marathons in a month and a half's time is that it really throws off the normal schedule of working out. I haven't been lifting cause I don't want to hurt myself and because I need all the power my under trained body can muster to finish the next two marathons on the schedule. Getting burnt out on lifting seems not smart right now.  I also haven't been running very much unless it involves a finish line and a medal because I am worried about doing too much and my tendinitis coming back and frankly I have just been tired and sore from doing a marathon and then a half back to back. I did three miles this morning and it took forever and I was just not interested in running at all. Completing three miles took all of my willpower. Not doing anything physical has left me with some extra time on my hands which I have used to catch up on some reading. This book is dark but as I read on I liked it more and ...

What I Talk About

Image
If you haven't read What I Talk About When I Talk About Running  by Haruki Murakami please do! I really liked this memoir. Based on the author's training journal while preparing for the New York City Marathon it is engaging with reflections on getting older and running, and running being more than a way to stay fit. It made me think my training journal with mileage, time, and for the past two months, constant whining about the heat could be taken up a notch with some lyrical prose. Favorite quotes: ...I don't think we should judge the value of our lives by how efficient they are (50). Running every day is a kind of lifeline for me, so I'm not going to lay off or quit because I'm busy. If I used being busy as an excuse not to run, I'd never run again. I have only a few reasons to keep on running, and  a truckload of them to quit. All I can do is keep   those  few reasons  nicely polished (73). People sometimes sneer at those who run every ...

Looking for an Adventure

Image
I am super lucky to be having many adventures this summer: Family coming to visit this week for adventure and half marathon cheering this weekend Sister getting married in Colorado- I am honored to get to be the photographer Headed to Minneapolis to visit my best friend and her fiance with a side of finishing my 30 before 30 half marathons goal Back to Minneapolis to celebrate my best friend's marriage Run, run and more running ...and any other adventures I can find. If you are looking for an adventure that does not require leaving home check out these: Bill Bryson- A Walk in the Woods When looking for a fun travel read I feel the best thing to do is ask a travel writer. Lucky for me I happen to know one. His recommendation is Bill Bryson. A Walk in the Woods  is a hilarious tale of an attempt to hike the Appalachian Trail. The author and I share the same, slightly irrational, fear of bears and delusion that we can do anything. While Bill is not successful in h...

I'm Sexy & I Know It

Image
Once again the race photographers have captured some real gems. From the Arizona Distance Classic : In other news I finished the Hunger Games Trilogy and loved it. I am not sure I want to see the movie though. Would the film version ruin it for me?  I also have some new shoes. I ordered them awhile ago off running warehouse  and they were around $50, After the half on Sunday my legs have been a little sore, more than usual. After thinking about it I realized my current Nike's have probably around 400 miles on them. Since I am a heavier runner that is about all they can take.  So these bright white wonders are for the longer distances and the old Nike's are only for treadmill and shorter distances. I like having two pairs of shoes to switch between. Seems to relieve some aches and pains to have different shoes and now that I am running more days back to back seems like a good idea. And to wrap up this rambling I ran six miles in 59 minutes...
