Naked Running

This morning I woke up planning to do speed work and then chickened out. I didn't want to aggrivate my tendon issue with too much awesomeness so instead I decided on an easy run on the bike path. I went to put my Garmin on......

                                 and it was
                                                                           DEAD!
why, Garmin, WHY

I mean....
                         I don't.......
What am I supposed to do with that?
I burned through 15 minutes on Google searching for how to fix it before finally remembering that I can run without it. Right....running can be done without a Garmin?

Yes, yes it can be. So I headed out the door on a six mile loop I know by heart and totally blew it out of the water. When I got back and did the pace calculation I ran a 9 minute pace on average to include a warm-up and cool-down mile meaning at some point I had to be running in the 8's.

That's right. 8's. And it didn't feel uncomfortable, or like I was going to die, or that I was going so fast I would spontaneously combust and never run again. This got me thinking that I might have become a little too reliant on the Garmin to dictate everything to me. The pace I am comfortable. The distance I should go. If I am going too fast or too slow. Running data free was kind of awesome. I think I am going to do more of this.

And just to clarify Naked Running = sans Garmin. There was no nudity on the bike path this morning. At least none due to me.
Garmin still ailing but am kind of okay with that.

  1. I am addicted to mine too! Katie runs without it every now & then (ie: during races) & says it's very liberating. I might have to give it up for a test run...or maybe not ;).

    1. I think I am going to try the happy medium- try just to use it for distance and forget about pace....we will see if that works:).

  2. Yay! Definitely worth doing sometimes!

    1. I never realized how codependent I had become. Some sort of weird data addiction. Going to have to come up with a 12 step run free program.

  3. I don't own a garmin, but run GPS free unless I am trying to hit speed times. I just use a timex stopwatch, and know where the mile markers are after running the route so often. Plus it helps you internalize your pace! Hanson approved! Great job not exploding at those fun speeds!

    1. I have been so bad about sticking to the Hanson plan this week. Think it is time to get back on the wagon.

  4. Ha ha ha. Your reaction to it being dead cracked me up! Way to go, speedy! I found in the winter that I ran faster in the dark, when I couldn't see the Garmin. So weird, right?

    1. You to may be a victim of too much Garmin information. I guess what you don't know can help you:).

  5. Ha ha, you are too much! I love the Signs video you included! That was kind of my reaction this morning when I got all the way to the gym without noticing the Garmin wasn't on my wrist. :-) Congrats on your speedy run!

    1. So funny- I think I left a comment on your blog the exact same time you did on mine. Great minds think alike:).
