Nellie

This week we had to say goodbye to our dog Nellie. She has been with me for most of my adult life. It is strange to turn around and her not be there under my feet trying to trip me down the stairs.

She was not exactly a good dog. She was destructive and on a constant hunt to find gum or lip balm to steal out of your purse and chew up. She has peed on just about everything that we own.
She didn't like to be petted or cuddled unless it was on her terms. If you woke her up she would snap at you.

Her favorite thing to eat was poop. Her absolute favorite flavor of poop was goose. She was constantly burping and farting, snoring or making some sort of noise. She would also try an attack dogs three times her size.
She was my constant companion when I was alone in a strange place when my husband was deployed for a year and a half. She has seen me through college, marriage, moving and living in Colorado, Alaska, Arizona and Illinois. She would go on short runs with in her younger years and walk until she about passed out if asked. She loved car rides, walks and me. She really loved licking everything possible off the kitchen floor.

Making the decision to say goodbye is the hardest we have ever had to make. But we know it was the right one. We will miss you Nellie and your unique flair. You made our lives more exciting, made us laugh, and loved us no matter what.

May you find never ending fields of goose poop in doggy heaven.

  1. Bean, I am so sorry for your loss. Your celebration of Nellie here is wonderful. I understand your pain more than you could realize; in a strange coincidence, we had to euthanize our almost 14-year-old Yellow Lab yesterday. I won't say it was a hard decision -- he had been in declining health and it was clearly time -- but I cried more yesterday morning than I had in the 11 1/2 years we had him combined. Best wishes to you and your husband, and your fond memories of Nellie.

  4. Oh poor Nellie- glad you were at least able to say goodbye. When we put my childhood dog down when I was a sophomore in college I developed a migraine from crying so hard, hope that didn't happen to you.

when the time is right, I hope you find a great new dog, not to replace Nellie, but to help fill the void that she left when she went to heaven :)

  5. :-( I am sorry for your loss. This week seems to have been a bad week for so many who have lost pets. Makes me sad!

  6. I'm so sorry! Our last, most ornery ever, dog went missing (we suspect she got attacked by a larger animal) on a visit to my in-law's farm. You just miss them hanging around licking everything up. And somehow I felt safer when she was around. Not that she could have actually done anything in an emergency, but they just make you feel safe.

And this may make you feel better or worse, but my husband was just telling us the story about how it was always his job to take the shotgun and put down the family dogs when it was time. He lost count of how many times he had done it. They had lots of dogs over the years. I'm going to go ahead and say that that is the worst chore ever to have as a kid. Thank goodness for vets.

  10. I'm so sorry! Nellie is SO adorable. I always love seeing a photo of her.

Losing a pet is so difficult. I lost my first dog about two years ago, and she was with me through some really difficult times, so I can relate.
