Step Back Week

This past week I had big plans. I was gonna do yoga, I was gonna lift, I was gonna run like a rockstar.

Instead I decided I was freakin tired and took it down a notch.

Awesome, but fatigue inducing.

One session of yoga on Monday (but it felt like many as my useless T-Rex arms hurt for four days after).

Three four miles runs all around 40 minutes or under.

One six mile interval run on the treadmill in 57:47 where I kind of just ran faster till I felt like passing out and then slowed down until I stopped seeing spots- repeated as necessary to hit six miles. I only scared the crap out of myself once by dropping my ipod on the belt and having it fly into the wall behind me. Treadmills are no joke.
I love you treadmill but you scare the crap out of me.


And today. Today I was going to run 12 -15 miles on a new route I even took the time to plan out on Map My Run until I realized that both my right and left shins have a weird pain in them and the top of my left foot hurts when I walk. One, I think I need new inserts -ordered and on the way. Two- pain coupled with extremely windy morning results in me sitting on the couch blogging about running instead of actually running. I ran 18 miles this week, usually I run between 30 and 40.

Since I bought this I should probably be running between 50 and 100 miles a week. 

Like a typical runner I felt all distraught about missing my long run. But seriously, I just ran a million half marathons back to back and been running pretty high mileage for me for awhile. My whole plan for November and December was to take it down a notch so I am healthy when I start marathon training and I want to go into the round of Spring half marathons stronger and faster. But it is hard to break the mind set of go, go, go. I think I will eat some tootsie rolls and come up with next weeks training plan. Maybe get crazy and do two days of yoga next week.

Anyone else have trouble taking their training down a notch?
What is your favorite x-training activity?
Why is it so difficult to get motivated to lift weights?

  1. Don't be so hard on yourself, Bean. You're not a machine. You HAVE been running a lot the past few weeks, and those treadmill sprint intervals probably caused a little damage. Rest up, heal, get ready to rock and roll. Enjoy!

  2. I can see how you feel distraught over missing your long run- but trust me, you will probably feel even stronger next week with the small step back. I went from crazy insane marathon training of 40-50+ miles a week for almost 5 months, to basically nothing post marathons because I was injured. I felt all sorts of emotion about not running because i was so used to it all the time. (even before my goal marathon, I cut back my mileage a ton to let the ankle issue heal) I felt fantastic for my marathon as a result.

    I just started lifting weights and hate it- but im noticing a huge difference in the way my ITB feels, so thats motivation enough for me :)

  4. I have a hard time weight lifting because I don't know what I'm doing. I know how to run so that's what I do. I think it's good to dial back on the running, your body will thank you for it.

  5. You totally deserve the break after all the half-marathons you've been running! If you figure out how to stay motivated with lifting weights let me know, I'm having a hard time figuring that one out too :P

  6. For me, it's hard for the first week, and then I slip into laziness quite easily.:) My daughter saw your tootsie rolls and said she couldn't bear to see them (meaning she wants all of them immediately). I love spin classes and yoga the most for cross training.

    1. Spinning and yoga are my go to, too. I really should ship you daughter some tootsie rolls. Someone needs to save me from myself.
